11/19/2023 0 Comments China quake lakeOn Wednesday, the government allocated 200m yuan ($29m, £14.5m) to making the "quake lakes" safe, Xinhua said. Tue 06.01 EDT A torrent of muddy water and debris roared down from the mountains of Sichuan today after soldiers used anti-tank rockets and dynamite to drain a dangerously unstable. More than 30 similar lakes were formed by the earthquake two weeks ago. "It is threatening millions of lives in the area downstream and any negligence will cause new disasters to people who have already suffered the quake," he said. On Tuesday, Vice-Premier Hui Liangyu visited the lake to observe work there. Hundreds of troops and engineers have been using earth-moving equipment to dig a channel in a bid to drain the water. If the water bursts through the natural barrier of rock and earth, more than one million people may have to be relocated, China Daily said. The official death toll from the 12 May quake was raised slightly on Tuesday to 67,183. Water would reach major urban areas within hours. China has emergency plans to move a further one million people. But there are fears that the dam could burst before they finish. Chinese soldiers have been working all night to dig a channel to ease pressure from the so-called 'quake lake'. China has evacuated more than 150,000 people living below an swollen lake formed by this months devastating earthquake amid fears it could burst and trigger massive flooding, state media said on. Residents around the city of Mianyang are being moved as troops dig diversion channels to relieve pressure on the lake, made by landslide-blocked rivers. The government response was praised as 'swift and very efficient' by Francis Marcus of the International Federation of the Red Cross in Beijing. China relocates another 80,000 people at risk from a huge lake created by the Sichuan earthquake. Liu Ning, chief engineer of the Ministry of Water Resources, says it now holds as much water as 50,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. China said it would accept international help to cope with the quake - the worst since 1976 when 242,000 people were killed in Tangshan - and offered its thanks. The lake's water level is rising by more than one metre per day. The first batch of Chinese soldiers, 515paratroopers, boarded a train and left the quake-stricken Sichuan Province after completing their relief operations on Monday. The aftershocks, coupled with heavy rain, are hampering relief efforts.Īccording to Chinese media, a total of 158,000 people have now been evacuated from potentially vulnerable areas downstream from Tangjiashan lake. As is the case in Wenchuan, the Diexi quake brought massive landslides at three points in Diexi, obstructing the Minjiang River (). The town of Diexi was entirely destroyed. Aftershocks are continuing to rock the region, and on Tuesday 63 people were injured, including six critically, in Qingchuan county, Xinhua news agency said. At 3:50 pm on August 25, 1933, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck Diexi, with an epicentral intensity of X. The large catchment area for the lake, the biggest of around 30 created by the quake, means that 2 millimeters of rain could cause a water level rise of 1 meter, Xinhua has said.
